California Serial Killer Dubbed The 'I-5 Strangler' Was Strangled To Death

A convicted serial killer was murdered the same way he killed his victims. Roger Reece Kibbe, who was known as the "I-5 Strangler," was found strangled to death in his prison cell. He was 81-years-old.

Kibbe was found unresponsive by guards at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County. His cellmate, Jason Budrow, 40, was standing over him. Budrow was convicted in 2011 of strangling his then-girlfriend.

An autopsy report determined that Kibbe's death was a homicide and that he was manually strangled to death. Authorities said they are continuing to investigate Kibbe's death and have not filed any charges against Budrow.

Kibbe was convicted of strangling a 17-year-old woman in 1991, but it wasn't until two decades later that authorities linked him to six additional murders in California. He was sentenced to consecutive life sentences after he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty.

His other victims included Lou Ellen BurleighStephanie BrownCharmaine SabrahLora HeedrickKatherine Kelly Quinones, and Barbara Ann Scott.

Kibbe strangled the woman to death and dumped their bodies along various highways in California. In addition to strangling the women, he also cut their clothing in odd patterns.

Burleigh was killed in 1977, while all of his other victims were murdered in 1986. Authorities believe he was responsible for more deaths, but Kibbe only confessed to killing seven women.
