John Brooks scored late as the United States escaped with a 2-1 win over Ghana to open World Cup play in Natal, Brazil.   Clint Dempsey gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead by scoring 29 seconds into the match, which is the fifth fastest goal in FIFA World Cup history.  The Americans avenged losses to Ghana in the last two World Cups.

The U.S. faces Portugal in its next match on Sunday.  Portugal was shut out by Germany 4-0 to open Group G play earlier today.
